Passage from the BookWhen I woke up after surgery, I could feel pins and needles in my legs, but I could not control them normally.
I knew how to walk. My brain knew exactly what I wanted my legs to do. My legs simply were not responding the way they had my entire life.
Recovery did not happen in one dramatic moment. It happened in pieces.
Standing beside a hospital bed. Pushing down through a walker with my arms. Lifting a leg from the hip. Stacking the joints underneath me. Squeezing whatever muscle would squeeze. Dragging the other leg forward. Trying to move down a hospital hallway. Making it halfway.
Then asking the physical therapist: "Can you come back this afternoon?"
On the second attempt, I went farther.
That became the pattern. Try. Find the limit. Recover. Try again. See if the limit moved.
Book's argumentThe message of Never Broken is not that everything works out.
Sometimes it does not. Hard work does not guarantee the outcome you want. Faith does not mean everything happens the way you hope. The message is that you still own the part that belongs to you. Your effort. Your preparation. Your standards. Your response. Your willingness to keep moving. That is where rebuilding begins. Never Broken does not mean never damaged. It means damage does not get the final word.
I spent more than 35 years in law enforcement and 22 years on a tactical team, rising to team leader. I owned a CrossFit gym. Then I had to teach my legs to work again. Today I teach as an adjunct instructor with Texas State University ALERRT. These lessons were not developed in a classroom.
